Lightning attachment characteristic of wind turbine generator: Experimental investigation and prediction method based on simulations

As the height of wind turbine increases, lightning strike accident has become a non-negligible issue. In this paper, attachment characteristic 2-MW generator (WTG) is investigated using model with reduced scale 100. The WTG equipped receptors on blades and rod nacelle, both serving as its external protection system (LPS). high-voltage electrode, which delivers impulse voltage from Marx generator, used to simulate final stage downward negative strikes 29 coming-leader positions. experimental results indicate that leaders either front directions or side could be intercepted effectively by LPS, whereas back-direction not. Moreover, increase striking distance, capture ratio for insulation part blade decreases. Electric field intensity distribution simulations full-scale model, conditions similar their counterparts, are conducted compared distribution. Based classical electro-geometrical simulative method proposed predict WTG. Our it feasible produce satisfactory approximation experimentally obtained
